“We go rolling down this highway
Chasing all our crazy dreams
I’ve gone your way and you’ve gone my way
And everywhere in between
One of these days we’ll find a piece of ground
Just outside of some sleepy little town
And set this circus down”

Yep, it’s finally time! After an entire summer of camping, 2 years at the beach, 6 months around the country, and 9 houses in 9 different cities over the past 9 years, we’ve decided it’s time to set this circus down.

When we started the search for our new home, we had a general idea of what we wanted (you don’t move 9 times in 9 years without learning a thing or two about what matters to you in a house or a neighborhood!) but we wanted to make sure we found a place that felt like “us”. So we set out to experience “real life” in each town we were considering. We went to local parks, watched how the kids and parents interacted, and talked to people about what they loved about their town. We stayed in hotels and rental homes so we could experience what it would be like to live there. We ate our meals in the restaurants, all the time chatting with locals about their schools, neighborhoods, and community.

Over the past 6 months, we fell in love with the small waterfront town of Benicia, CA, and shockingly, we decided that we liked it enough to try laying some roots!

Why Benicia? Well, so far… the people are so nice, and everyone we’ve met really seems to LOVE living in Benicia! The water (you know I love being on the water!) and the gorgeous waterfront views. We’re only 15 minutes from family. For such a small town, Benicia has an awesome downtown with plenty of restaurants, antique shops, a teahouse, and even some nightlife. We’re downtown, so we can walk or bike just about ANYWHERE. We have easy access to the water for kayaking, and proximity to the water makes for a cooler climate, which we’ve grown to love from living in Stinson. There’s tons of history here. The schools are great. And the kicker – its much more affordable than surrounding areas which means we still have money for all the travel and fun stuff that we love to do.

Which brings me to the one question everyone asks me… Is that it? Is the adventure over? No way! In fact, one of the first things we are putting up in the new house is an enormous world map (thanks, uncle Scott!) where each of us can indicate where we want to go next. No… there are way too many places to go and experiences to have – so we don’t plan to settle down just yet. That said, we are also looking forward to being part of a community and having a home we’ll look forward to returning to between adventures.

For now, we’re unpacking and getting used to life in Benicia, but I’m sure it’s just a matter of time until the next adventure calls. Meantime, if you’re interested in a house swap, we’ve (finally) got a sweet place to offer up 🙂
